A Mayor of London film about trailblazing mental health football club Tower Hamlets Tigers FC

The Tower Hamlets Tigers FC are featured as one in a series of short films made by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan to celebrate the power of football and to commemorate the Euro 2020 Championship.

The Mayor’s film series focuses on a cross-section of London’s vibrant and diverse communities that are joined together by more than football.

The Tower Hamlets Tigers feature as a National Health Service team. They play as part of the Mental Health League, with strong links to ELFT’s Tower Hamlets Centre for Mental Health.

They were formed in 2007 and have won the league cup twice, in 2017 and 2018.

The whole team were happy to take part in the film, but Eddie and Suzanne stepped forward as spokespeople and representatives for the team.

Both describe how much they enjoy being part of the team and how it has helped them develop in a whole range of ways.

On the decision by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan to create the film, Brenda Philips, Lead Sports Therapist at the THCforMH, said:

"I'm really pleased the team are getting the recognition. The dedication they have shown to the club through thick and thin is inspirational. By coming together in this way, everyone improves their fitness and football skills and has fun. It's a great healthy way to meet new people and build fitness.

Marica Wainner, Health Development Co-ordinator for ELFT's People Participation Team said: "It's a really powerful film! Even for just these few short minutes, you get a real insight into the strength of everyone's character in the team. Thank you to the Mayor's Office for highlighting how powerful sport and football can be in supporting mental health."

Derek Bennett, co-founder of the Tower Hamlets Tigers Football club & Tower Hamlets Council’s Sports Projects Manager said:

“I’m very proud of the team, which continues to attract new players of all abilities, who go on to quickly improve both their mental and physical health through the joy of football.

“It’s really fun, positive and it works for the community. Tower Hamlets Council is pleased by the results and delighted to have supported it from the start.”

Other teams profiled include a trailblazing LGBTQ+ squad Soho FC and Camden and Islington United, a team aiming to unite two boroughs through a shared passion for football and community service.

Tower Hamlets Tigers FC is a  Mental health division team (for anyone registered under secondary mental health services and Community Mental Health Teams)

Sessions are at Stepney Green Park 3G Pitch, Wednesdays 1pm-3pm.
