A very special Trust colleague who, time and again, gives her all for the people she works with swept the judges off their feet at the National Unsung Hero Awards on Friday 1 March.
Amanda Piper, ‘Housekeeper and human dynamo’ based at East Ham Care Centre’s Sally Sherman Ward won the award category for Ancillary Staff Leader of the Year, and for her colleagues that joined Amanda on the trip to Manchester for the ceremony, it was thoroughly well deserved.
The Annual Unsung Hero Awards are the only national awards for non-medical NHS staff and volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty.
Clinical Nurse Manager Tracy Connellan nominated Amanda for the award and said: ‘“I have worked as a mental health nurse for 20 years and have never met a staff member like Amanda. She has worked for the NHS for years as a Band 3 housekeeper and every day goes beyond the call of duty. Her kindness and commitment to the patients we care for is gold standard. Our patients have dementia with severe challenging behaviour and Amanda has arranged funerals when there is no family, buys clothes at our local shopping centre when our patients come with nothing, not to mention all the parties and special treats she organises.
“Amanda always stays to help without being asked when she sees the need. Her communication skills with our client group are amazing to watch. Carers always give me such positive feedback about Amanda, this ward would not be the same for the patients and staff without her.”
Amanda started working on The Sally Sherman Ward fifteen years ago and has been working there as Housekeeper for the last five.
Tracy went on to say: “It was brilliant getting the opportunity to celebrate Amanda’s dedication at the ceremony in Manchester. The stories of the other nominees were fabulous to hear.
"She has worked on Sally Sherman continuously and has always gone above and beyond."
On being recognised for her outstanding commitment, Amanda said: “It was a big enough reward to have such good company on the trip up to the ceremony, that alone made me very happy.
“To actually win was absolutely amazing.”
