The City Street Triage Team attended the launch of the Tidal Thames Water Safety Forum Drowning Prevention Strategy that took place on board 'The Silver Sturgeon'.
According to the 'Drowning Prevention Strategy' drowning in the Thames ended the lives of 30 people in 2018, which accounts for 8% of drowning-related deaths nationally.
'The vast majority of those affected were found to have ongoing mental health issues, even if they had not directly stated an intention to complete suicide.' states the report.
Immediate help is more likely to be provided by a passerby due to the urgency of the situation:
'The overriding message from the presentation was to encourage members of the public to approach people they are concerned about, and a simple “Hello, how are you?” can make a difference to a person contemplating ending their life' says Amanda Magnus, Occupational Therapist.
