East Ham Care Centre,
The Newham Adult Speech and Language Therapy Team are organising a stall at East Ham Care Centre to raise awareness of swallowing difficulties, also known as Dysphagia.
They are inviting people to join them for tea and cake to highlight how dysphagia affects people’s lives, and how Speech and Language Therapy can help those living with the condition.
Dysphagia describes eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties in infants, children and adults. Such difficulties have potentially life-threatening consequences. They can result in choking, pneumonia, chest infections, dehydration, malnutrition and weight loss. They can also make taking medication more difficult and they can lead to a poorer quality of life for the individual and their family.
Sometimes people may struggle to swallow and make personal adaptations instead of seeking medical advice. Speech and Language Therapists can offer support to those affected with dysphagia to eat, drink and swallow safely.
We want Swallowing Awareness Day to reach even more people in 2019 to help spread the word about swallowing difficulties and the role of Speech and Language Therapy, so we need all of you, your friends, colleagues and family to get involved with the campaign!
