The Tower Hamlets Mental Health Liaison and Psychological Medicine team provides a mental health assessment to people of all ages (16+) in Tower Hamlets.
The service will assess patients who attend the A&E department at the Royal London Hospital, and also provides mental health assessment to inpatients at The Royal London Hospital, Mile End Hospital or the London Chest Hospital.
The multi-disciplinary team combines expertise in adult and older people’s mental health to provide assessment, treatment and management of mental health problems including anxiety, depression, dementia, schizophrenia and any other mental health or psychological problem in a ward setting or in the A&E department. They can also provide specialist alcohol and drug support.

The team assesses people who attend the A&E department at the Royal London Hospital. Either people who refer themselves or referral by a GP or other concerned agencies via the triage nurse in the A&E Department
People in mental health crisis should attend the Reception area in A&E.
The team will assess anyone with a mental health problem who is in crisis, including anxiety, depression, dementia, schizophrenia and any other mental health or psychological issue.
The team will see people in the A&E department who are experiencing a mental health crisis or an serious mental health episode. They will try to understand what has been happening, the cause of the deterioration, support already in place for the individual and with them, work on a plan going forward.
Additionally, the team will assess people admitted to hospital with physical health issues who may have an existing mental health issue, or be mentally unwell due to shock, trauma, distress or other causes.
People will be assessed by one of a team of mental health practitioners.
