Cycling to reduce harmful emissions
THEIS (Tower Hamlets Early Intervention Service), supporting young adults aged 18-35 experiencing a first episode of psychosis increasingly cycle when making home visits instead of using cars, taxis or public transport. This has not been easy since the Bethnal Green based team have to travel as far as the Isle of Dogs and East Poplar more often than not during poor weather conditions. Nonetheless with the support of the Cycle Scheme implemented and promoted by ELFT’s Wellbeing Team, ELFT’s emissions have reduced whilst staff have seen improved health and fitness with mileage expenses. The number of THEIS staff now cycling has increased to double digits!
Lighting Upgrades
THEIS has recently upgraded its lighting system resulting in 75% cuts in energy usage and associated costs.
Stop leaving PC’s and staff devices on standby!
Pilot studies with THEIS where staff have consciously made efforts to turn off all PC’s and other devices instead of leaving them in standby has reduced emissions and costs for ELFT. Please be mindful and turn off all unused devices that are left in standby mode whilst ensuring lights in areas unused from meeting and hot-desking rooms to toilets are turned off.
Reducing the use of single use products
By reducing the use of single use products THCHS Continence Service has been able to procure more cost effective biodegradable elements alternatives, reduce waste and storage issues by not having to throw away unused items reducing ELFT’s carbon foot print and the amount of product that need to initially be produced. For example by prescribing washable absorbent underwear for women and men that can be washed at lower temperatures has resulted in a 50% carbon footprint reduction and produced 75% less consumer waste. In the first quarter of 2024 alone ELFT saved £1,932.23.
