Newham clinical nurse specialist and lead for the Newham leg ulcer service, Dr Caroline Dowsett, has been awarded the BEM in recognition of the difference her work has made to the health and wellbeing of the Newham community.
Dr Dowsett started her nursing journey over 45 years ago and has served Newham community services for 30 years. She pioneered the first nurse-led tissue viability service in Newham, seeing it grow into a vital and respected part of local care provision.
Dr Dowsett has published her work widely and co-authored several influential papers and best practice documents on wound care, including work on infection management pathways, quality improvement and clinical decision support tools.
Her passion and commitment to improving wound care extends beyond Newham. Dr Dowsett is recognised nationally and internationally for her leadership in advancing wound care practices and mentoring clinical teams across the NHS.
In describing Dr Dowsett, Newham tissue viability service lead nurse, Carole Taylor, said: "Her tireless efforts have inspired countless colleagues and transformed care for patients with wounds.
"This prestigious honour is a testament to Caroline’s remarkable contributions, and we are incredibly proud to have such an inspiring individual in our team."
Dr Dowsett said: "I am honoured to receive the British Empire Medal for my service to the NHS and humbled to be recognised for my professional work.
"It is a privilege to care for patients and to work alongside such dedicated and compassionate colleagues throughout my career."
