ELFT Chief Executive Lorraine Sunduza OBE was invited to officially open the new room on Galaxy Ward on June 11.
The room was developed as part of a wider strategy to reduce restrictive interventions and better support young people, particularly those with sensory needs. Designed as a calm and quiet space, it offers a much-needed environment away from the often stimulating atmosphere of the ward.
Speaking at the opening, Lorraine spoke of her pride that The Coborn Centre continues to foster least restrictive interventions and put young people’s welfare at the forefront of its therapeutic interventions.
"This space has been valuable in reducing our use of more restrictive interventions and ensuring our neuro-diverse young people have a space to be supported with their sensory needs,” said Service Manager Richard Vivian.
Following the official opening, staff and young people came together for the annual summer barbecue. The afternoon was filled with laughter, food, and a shared sense of community.
Deputy Lead Nurse Graham Manyere said, “Seeing everyone come together was representative of how we work and support our young people and families, as one.”
The Coborn Centre is an in-patient service for young people with complex and severe mental health difficulties.
