Sadly, research findings show that domestic abuse incidents increase by 38% when England lose, and by 26% when they win! It is important to be clear that sporting events do not cause domestic abuse. However, evidence suggests that certain factors associated with major tournaments can intensify existing abusive behaviours or increase risk for those already experiencing abuse. Particularly with later kick‑off times as seen in this World Cup.
ELFT Posters
ELFT’s Safeguarding team have produced posters for display in public areas across the Trust during the FIFA World Cup to raise awareness of the risks and where to get help.

James Thomas, ELFT’s Lead Professional for Adult Safeguarding, Domestic Abuse and Prevent, said:
“There is no excuse for domestic abuse. While football should be a time of shared enjoyment, it can coincide with increased risk of domestic abuse linked to factors such as increased alcohol use, heightened emotions and financial pressures linked to gambling. Cultural attitudes are also a factor that can normalise aggression or harmful expressions of masculinity. Sadly, this all too often results in perpetrators of abuse being abusive and violent to those who are closest to them, including their children.”
