East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) is marking Learning Disability Awareness Week by highlighting the powerful voices and experiences of people supported through Tower Hamlets Shared Lives, alongside invitations to community events focused on empowerment and inclusion.
Three short films share real-life stories from people involved in Shared Lives, illustrating how personalised support helps individuals live fulfilling, independent lives:
- Sarah, Alan and Chris’ story
- Mohima, Mahida and Habibah’s story
- Margaret, Megan and Dana’s story
The films showcase the importance of relationships, community connection and choice, reflecting this year’s theme of “Do you see me?”.
To bring people together during the week, Tower Hamlets is hosting a free interactive event for adults with learning disabilities:
- Gardening Session - Monday 15 June, 10am - 2pm - Twinwoods Clinical Resource Centre
Help the Health Equalities Team celebrate Learning Disability Awareness Week and show off the garden you helped to create.
- Your Say Your Day - Wednesday 17 June, 11am - 2.30pm - Grocers Wing 1 & 2, Tower Hamlets Town Hall, 160 Whitechapel Road, E1 1BJ
The session offers a chance for people to have their voices heard, discuss key issues, meet others and take part in activities, with lunch provided.
ELFT encourages staff, service users and partners to watch the Shared Lives stories and support the event, celebrating the strengths, contributions and voices of people with learning disabilities across Tower Hamlets.
- ELFT Health Equalities Team drop-in - Wednesday 17 June, 11am-3pm - Stopsley Day Centre, 562 Hitchin Road, Luton, LU2 7UG
