ME/CFS, is a chronic multi system illness, characterised by profound fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, sleep issues, and significant post-exertional malaise (PEM) that is not relieved by rest. Current research indicates dysregulation of several systems in the body, which may explain the wide range of symptoms that people experience.
ME/CFS remains a condition that is not yet fully understood. The exact cause is unknown, though commonly follows an infection episode or negative and stressful life events. Because symptoms vary widely and can fluctuate, diagnosis and management can be challenging. Unfortunately, misunderstanding about the condition can lead to delays in diagnosis or appropriate support.
The Bedfordshire Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Service is a specialist multi-disciplinary fatigue management service, comprised of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and psychologists. We support people living with ME/CFS in Bedfordshire to understand and improve management of their symptoms, in line with current NICE guidelines.
GPs can refer patients who meet the clinical criteria for further evaluation, management advice, and tailored support.
