Centred on the theme of Intersectionality, the conference explored how our overlapping identities such as race, gender, sexuality, disability and faith shape our experiences at work and in our communities.
The event brought together voices from every corner of ELFT with staff describing it as “powerful,” “empowering,” and “a much-needed space to connect and reflect.”
Inspiring reflections from Dr Navina Evans
The conference opened with a keynote address from Dr Navina Evans, Chief Workforce, Training and Education Officer at NHS England whose message set a hopeful, forward-looking tone.
Dr Evans reminded colleagues that “Inclusion is not a side issue... it’s fundamental to how we care.”
She celebrated the growing strength of staff networks, describing them as “living proof that when people come together around shared values, transformation happens.”
“The power of your staff networks will continue to grow and really influence,” she said. “Networks build trust when people feel disempowered and they remind us of our shared humanity especially at a time when our workforce is under strain.”
Dr Evans also highlighted the importance of networks in developing leadership: “Staff networks also support leaders to grow. They’re a good place for developing talent and leadership, helping staff feel valued, supported and listened to.”
Her reflections resonated strongly across ELFT encouraging all staff to see inclusion as part of daily practice.
What colleagues said
Feedback from across the Trust highlighted the event’s impact, sense of connection, and openness to learning:
“It was really nice connecting with all the network leads in one place - informative, supportive and safe.”
“Thank you for a brilliant conference. The leads managed to bring all the networks together and discuss intersectionality in a very supportive, kind, and useful way. I feel empowered to do more for the Ability Network.”
“It was so interesting to have all the networks in one place and listen to others. A good action for me is to make sure lower band staff are represented next time.”
“The All Staff Conference was commendable - well structured, coordinated and positive throughout. The open conversations about how we function at work were the therapy I needed in these challenging times.”
“I’m so happy the focus was on intersectionality. It was amazing and I hope it becomes an annual event.”
“The online format made it accessible for me as a neurodivergent colleague — I could join safely from my desk, use the chat and Mentimeter, and still feel part of it. Thank you.”
A space for reflection and action
Several colleagues asked for more information about joining Staff Networks and others committed to ensuring lower band staff are represented in future events.
Feedback also highlighted interest in topics such as career progression, allyship and inclusive leadership all of which will help shape ongoing inclusion work across the Trust.
Thank you
Claire McKenna, Chief Nurse and Executive Equity Lead, said: “Thank you to all our staff networks and everyone who joined this year’s event. The conversations were heartfelt and courageous and your contributions remind us that inclusion is everyone’s responsibility.
