As the Senior Independent Director at ELFT, I am entrusted with the responsibility of working alongside the board members to devise our strategy and ensure its successful implementation. However, there came a point in my life when I faced a health issue that demanded my attention.
For as long as I can remember, I would find myself needing to excuse myself during long meetings to use the bathroom. Initially, I dismissed it as a consequence of consuming coffee to stay awake during those lengthy sessions. But over time, it became more intrusive, affecting my sleep as I woke up multiple times during the night to urinate. I tried reducing my evening fluid intake, which provided some relief, but even a few drinks, regardless of whether they contained alcohol, would disrupt my sleep. Ignoring the issue, I continued with my routine until my partner insisted that I seek medical assistance, likely due to the disturbance caused by my constant nighttime bathroom visits. Reluctantly, I turned to the internet for a self-diagnosis, suspecting either an oversensitive bladder or prostate cancer.
Recognising the need for professional guidance, I promptly scheduled an emergency appointment with my GP. Understandably, she did not endorse my self-diagnosis, especially considering that a benign prostate problem was far more likely in my case. It's worth noting that such conditions affect around one-third of men over the age of 50. Nonetheless, prostatic cancer, the most common form of cancer in men, warranted ruling it out. When I shared the duration and severity of my symptoms, my doctor's expression conveyed a hint of concern, and I couldn't help but feel a bit foolish for not addressing the issue sooner.
My GP referred me for tests, which eventually revealed that my prostate was swelling and pushing against my bladder, reducing its holding capacity. Luckily, I was presented with a groundbreaking treatment option: a procedure that involved using steam to target and destroy problematic cells within the prostate. The treatment was performed as a day case, and the results were remarkable. Although I occasionally still need to excuse myself from meetings and get up once during the night, the frequency has significantly decreased. The most important aspect of my experience was taking that proactive step to get checked out. All too often, we let such issues linger, only to face more complex treatments, uncertain outcomes, and potentially serious consequences. I was fortunate that my condition turned out to be something relatively minor and readily treatable.
Reflecting on my journey, I feel compelled to share a dual message. Firstly, it is crucial not to delay seeking medical attention when confronted with persistent health concerns. I regret not addressing my symptoms earlier, as it would have spared me years of unnecessary discomfort. Secondly, it is imperative to place trust in healthcare professionals. While the internet can provide information, it is the expertise of our doctors that should guide us toward appropriate actions.
Through sharing my personal story, I hope to inspire all ELFT staff members and beyond to prioritise their health, listen to their bodies, and place their trust in medical expertise. Each of us has the power to take charge of our well-being and ensure a healthier future.
