On 10 September each year, organisations from across the world come together to raise awareness of suicide prevention.
The World Health Organization’s theme from 2024-2026 is ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’. This theme calls on us all to challenge harmful myths, reduce stigma, and foster open, compassionate conversations about suicide. It is about shifting from silence and misunderstanding to openness, empathy, and support — creating environments where people feel able to speak up and seek help.
While suicide prevention day is a positive time to support people, we are aware it can also be triggering for those who are suffering with either their own suicidal thoughts or the loss of a loved one to suicide.
If you are in a mental health crisis, you can call NHS 111, Option 2 in east London, Bedfordshire and Luton. You will be connected to a 24/7 mental health service based in ELFT’s crisis hub. Take a look at our 'Get Help in an Emergency' web page for full details.
For World Suicide Prevention Day 2025, Professor Alexandra Pitman was interviewed about her ongoing work and research related to self-harm and suicide. You can read her insightful interview here:
Professor Pitman is the Chief investigator for the upcoming ‘EPO on inpatient units in England - The acceptability, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of Enhanced Patient Observation in reducing the risk of self-harm and suicide on psychiatric wards’ funded by the NIHR and sponsored by North London Foundation Trust.
To support World Suicide Prevention Day, we are also sharing additional details of community mental health services available across east London, Bedfordshire and Luton.
