The manualized group body psychotherapy (BPT) for patients with bodily distress disorder (formerly “somatoform disorder”) has been developed and evaluated as a treatment method for patients with a wide range of somatisation symptoms and problems. BPT not only focuses on the neuroscientific findings in respect of the aetiopathogenesis of the complaints but also offers specific answers to the explanatory model of a “dysfunctional body” to the patients. The therapeutic process is outlined according to the manual. Results of psychotherapy research to evaluate the effectiveness of BPT in these patient groups are briefly summarized in this article. Finally, the therapist’s point of view in the handling of the manual in the context of a study within routine care settings are reported.
