Why we should stop talking about "medically unexplained symptoms" etc. - the problem of overgeneralisation for research and treatment Bodily symptoms and disorders that are unaccompanied by observable physical abnormalities are a common subject of research and conversation in public health, medicine, and psychological therapies. Psychosomatic, functional, somatic symptoms disorder, bodily distress disorder, medically unexplained symptoms, and persistent physical symptoms are commonly used labels. For patients with any long-term physical health condition, psychological therapy may help to manage symptoms and reduce the impact on functioning and mental wellbeing.
