You are viewing this page because you recently received a letter explaining that your referral to the Adult ADHD Service has been discharged. Your self‑assessment identified that you experience mild functional impairment.
We know this may feel disappointing or frustrating, and we want to give you clear information about why this decision was made and what support is still available for you.
As part of your referral, you completed questionnaires about:
• your current ADHD related symptoms, and
• the impact they may be having on your day-to-day life.
NICE guidelines recommend a specialist ADHD assessment only when symptoms cause significant functional impairment across different areas of life (such as work, relationships, self care or safety). Your results did not currently indicate this level of impairment, which means an ADHD assessment is not indicated at this time.
NHS ADHD services follow national guidance to ensure assessments are:
• fair
• consistent
• based on clinical need
• prioritised for those experiencing significant impairment
This helps services remain safe, sustainable and accessible for those who need specialist treatment most.
The decision to discharge you does not mean you aren’t experiencing ADHD type symptoms.
Many people experience attention, organisation or focus difficulties that affect their life in milder ways.
You are not being told that your experiences are “not valid” — only that they do not currently meet the threshold for a specialist ADHD assessment.
