The team had observed that many of their patients arrived in socks that were too tight, too thin, or poorly designed for their foot health needs, worsening their foot issues. Particularly concerning for those with neuropathy, reduced circulation, or who presented in unsuitable or worn-out hosiery.
The team’s ‘Warm Socks & Smiles Bundle’ offered a moment of dignity, warmth and reassurance to patients in financial hardship or with limited understanding of appropriate footwear. The socks were paired up with leaflets about taking care of their feet and led to touching and meaningful exchanges with patients and greater comfort, whilst directly supporting their recovery and overall experience.
Amanda Wildgoose, Operational Lead for the service said, “This has given clinicians an opportunity to offer kindness in a simple, practical way, without judgement or intrusive questions. Clinical skills whilst of the uttermost importance, alone are not enough. Kindness builds rapport and reduces anxiety. Providing something as basic as warm, well-fitting socks has often created a meaningful connection, helping patients feel more comfortable, valued, and cared for.”
Demonstrating again that small caring touches that can go along way!
