Amin Islam received the ‘Greener Health Award’ at East London NHS Foundation Trust’s (ELFTs) annual Staff Awards.
Amin is the Interim Deputy Practice Manager at Health E1 Homeless Medical Centre on Brick Lane, a GP surgery that registers people who are street homeless, sofa surfing or in hostel accommodation across the borough. He has used sustainable practices in everyday healthcare delivery by leading on initiatives that improve environmental responsibility.
A recent project that helped to land Amin the award was his proactive approach to working with Estates and Facilities colleagues at ELFT, alongside neighbouring Barts Health NHS Trust to implement more effective recycling systems across the Centre. By working with both trusts, Amin received clearly labelled bins for general and recyclable waste and has regularly reminded staff of the environmental impact of their actions. As a result, Amin has promoted low-carbon practices and reduced waste.
Amin has worked in the NHS for seven years and initially joined ELFT as a receptionist.
Commenting on his award win, Amin said: “I have really enjoyed working for ELFT from day one, especially within our inclusion practices that serve some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. I am passionate about creating a better experience for both patients and staff.
“Being recognised with this award is a true testament to that commitment, and embedding greener health and a sustainable future makes the recognition even more meaningful. I am deeply grateful to my colleagues, especially my line managers, for their constant encouragement, motivation, and nomination for this award.”
Services, teams and individuals who work in east London, Bedfordshire and Luton won awards across a host of categories at the 2025 ELFT Staff Awards.
The evening was funded by not-for-profit community interest company Compass Wellbeing.
The ceremony was held at the popular Art Deco music venue, Troxy, in Whitechapel. The room was packed out with over 500 people who gathered to celebrate the achievements of their colleagues.
The ceremony began with a performance by the Trust’s #ELFTin1Voice choir, comprising of staff, service users and carers.
Lorraine Sunduza OBE, who is the Trust’s Chief Executive, and Paul Binfield, Director of People Participation, compéred the event.
