Being physically active is one of the best things we can do for our health. Regular exercise can improve cardiovascular health, help maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and stroke, and is even associated with a lower risk of several cancers. who.int
Physical activity can significantly improve mental wellbeing, helping to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve mood, boost self-esteem, and enhance quality of life. nhs.uk Research has shown that exercise can also be beneficial for people living with severe mental illness, improving both mental health symptoms and physical health outcomes. cambridge.org
If you have ever felt unsure about attending a gym, worried about your fitness level, or uncertain about what local support is available, this event is a great opportunity to explore a welcoming and supportive environment.
The event is free, with no booking, and open to everyone, including members of the public, families, carers, patients, and ELFT and GLL staff. It is organised by East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) and GLL Community Leisure Services and takes place on 31 July 2026, 10am-4pm, at Bedford International Athletic Stadium.
ELFT's Director of Population Health, Laura Austin Croft, said:
"Being active is one of the most powerful things any of us can do for our health. Days like this are a reminder that good health isn't only built in clinics. It's built in communities, and it starts with something as simple as feeling welcome enough to give something a go."
Steve Muggridge, the Trust's Health Development Coordinator, said:
"What I love about the Wellbeing Games is that people come along, try something, and often surprise themselves. Working in partnership across Bedfordshire and Luton is what makes that possible. It's a free day, welcoming, and right on people's doorstep."
Activities are designed for all ages and abilities, with opportunities to try a range of sports and fitness activities, take part in exercise sessions, enjoy tours of local gym facilities, and visit information stalls showcasing physical activity opportunities available in the area. Inflatables and children's activities mean parents and carers can take part too.
A floor plan of the venue is available, covering both floors, including registration, information stalls, the sports hall, gym, café, Quiet Zone, toilets and First Aid.
