East London NHS Foundation Trust is proud to support International Stammering Awareness Day on 22 October. You may have noticed the Stammering Pride flag flying outside Alie Street.
International Stammering Awareness Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of stuttering, challenging misconceptions and recognising the importance of creating environments where everyone feels heard, respected and included.
ELFT is a provider of Speech and Language Therapy services that treat local people across East London, Bedfordshire and Luton.
Understanding stuttering: Stammering, also known as stuttering, is a difference in speech fluency that can involve repeating sounds, syllables or words, prolonging sounds, or experiencing interruptions when speaking.
“Stammering affects people in different ways and can vary between situations” said Laura Pisaneschi, Consultant Nurse and Lead of the ELFTAbility Staff Network.
It is important to recognise that stuttering does not reflect a person's intelligence, knowledge, confidence or ability. Someone may know exactly what they want to say but find it difficult to get the words out fluently.
Greater awareness and understanding can help challenge misconceptions, reduce stigma and make everyday interactions more inclusive.
Small changes can make a big difference
We all have a role to play in creating environments where people who stutter feel comfortable communicating in their own way, without unnecessary pressure or judgement.
Here are some simple ways to help:
- Be patient. Give people the time they need to express themselves without finishing their sentences or speaking over them.
- Listen to the message. Focus on what the person is saying rather than how fluently they are speaking.
- Give people your attention. Maintain natural eye contact and show that you are listening, just as you would in any other conversation.
- Avoid making assumptions. Do not assume someone is nervous, lacks confidence or needs help simply because they stutter.
- Ask what works best. Everyone is different. If you are unsure how to support someone, ask respectfully and follow their preferences.
- Challenge stigma. Help create a culture where stuttering is not a reason for jokes, judgement or exclusion.
These small actions can help make conversations more comfortable and ensure that everyone – whether they stammer or not - is given the opportunity to participate fully.
