The change reflects the Centre's commitment to creating a more welcoming, recovery-focused environment that celebrates hope, growth, and connection.
After a series of collaborative workshops with staff and young people, the new names were chosen to better represent the values and spirit of the Coborn Centre community. As part of this process, young people shared ideas that resonated with their experiences of care, recovery, and belonging, helping to shape names that feel positive and forward-looking.
The wards have now been renamed as follows:
- Coborn Acute Ward is now Nova Ward
- Coborn PICU Ward is now Pluto Ward
These names were selected to inspire optimism and curiosity, ‘Nova’ symbolising new beginnings and light, and ‘Pluto’ representing calmness and space for reflection.
An official launch event will take place at the Coborn Centre in the coming weeks to celebrate this milestone. The celebration will recognise the creativity, leadership, and involvement of young people and staff who helped make this change possible.
George Chingosho, Interim Director for Children and Specialist Services, said:
"This renaming reflects the collaborative spirit of our service. We're proud that our young people played such an active role in shaping how their environment is represented. The new names symbolise hope, recovery, and the shared journey we take together."
There are three wards at the Coborn Centre:
- Galaxy Ward (this remains unchanged)
- Nova Ward (previously Acute Ward)
- Pluto Ward (previously PICU Ward)
