What do we do?
The occupational therapy team provides specialist occupational therapy assessment and intervention to individuals with learning disabilities to identify their functional needs, what is meaningful to them and the barriers preventing them from becoming more independent. We support individuals, their families and carers to make changes to their environments that will improve their quality of life, reduce distress, build skills and confidence in independent tasks and support those around the individual to continue this in everyday life.
People with learning disabilities have the same aspirations as everyone else – to be as independent as possible, build on their existing skills, have a good quality of life and to receive person-centred care from those around them. We use a variety of tools and approaches such as sensory-based approaches, intensive interaction and graded exposure to identify the individual’s needs and make recommendations. We focus on the goals of the individual, and we work very closely with our colleagues in the wider SPLD service to provide a holistic and seamless approach to each individual and their carers..
