Occupational Therapy aims to promote a person's health and wellbeing through their everyday activities. It is a way of enabling a person to achieve as much as they can for themselves and get the most out of life. See our information leaflet.
An Occupational Therapist can identify problem areas that a person may have in their everyday life and will help them to work out practical solutions.
Everyday activities can include:
- getting on/off a bed, chair or toilet
- washing, dressing and bathing
- managing steps and stairs
- getting in and out of their home
- domestic tasks such as making a meal
- leisure and work activities
How can we help
An Occupational Therapist will look at the activity the person is finding difficult and see if there is another way it can be completed safely. This will be done by breaking the activity down into smaller steps and then practising them with the patient.
Occupational Therapy may involve changing the environment to make it suitable for a person's needs. An Occupational Therapist can also trial special tools or pieces of equipment that may make an activity more manageable.
Occupational Therapy input may include specialist equipment provision, minor adaptations and/or transfer aids, e.g. a mobile hoist, over-bed hoist, manual handling equipment.
