From Healthcare Assistant to District Nurse

Career progression is one of the most important components workers consider when either choosing a career or remaining with an organisation.

To that end, ELFT’s Community Health Services have been working hard to provide opportunities for staff to follow their dreams and help them progress in their career.

Caring, focussed and compassionate people like Love-Jane Egbe has done just that. Read her story below:   

As a healthcare Assistant, I rose to a senior support worker and did a bit of recovery work. I believed that I could do more by returning to a nursing career. 

I received an email from Caroline Ogunsola asking overseas nurses who currently work as support workers or in other roles and wish to transfer to nursing to contact her for more information. I jumped on this amazing offer as I have always looked forward to this! 

The entire process was quite swift, after crossing the hurdle of submitting paper works, from abroad to NMC UK. The exams were core nursing based with some study brush up, success should follow.

The ILETS can be daunting but supporting documents from my school of Nursing prove that all studies were taught in the English language. I appealed the decision insisting that I must take the English test prior to acceptance on the nursing register and proved to the NMC panel that I could communicate effectively in English, which will enable me practice efficiently as a nurse in the United Kingdom. 

ELFT graciously provided the platform that helped me prepare for my OSCE and paid for my OSCEs, I sat for the exam and was successful on my first attempt! 

Any overseas nurse doing other jobs but desires to return to nursing should take this unique opportunity that our amazing Trust ELFT provides to prepare international nurses and get them ready to successfully sit for the OSCE and more!

They should just play their part in submitting documents required by NMC across the country they trained in and the United Kingdom and prepare for the exams. This can be challenging but don't give up, you will smile in the end and forget the stress that came with it!

I had been a support worker/senior healthcare assistant and a recovery worker for a total of 4 years. 

I will like to progress in my career as a District nurse and would like to start by training as a district nurse and progress on that path with an open mind to other exciting adventures that the future holds! 

I'm currently a community nurse at the EPCT North-East team, Newham.
