We accept referrals for ADHD assessment from any professional working with your child. We will gather additional information if necessary to help us understand if there is hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention. To make a diagnosis of ADHD, we need some evidence that these symptoms have been present before the age of 12 and are causing significant in a number of settings.

We can accept self referrals, but will always need to speak to a school to gather more information.  

If there are urgent concerns in the referral, our duty team will need to make contact to support those first. 

We review all the information received about ADHD. If there is sufficient evidence we will contact you by phone to discuss your concerns in a bit more detail. This will help us to gather any important information to support us in our detailed assessment. We may also signpost you to other treatment services for support with things like anxiety, mood or behaviour.

Once we have agreed to conduct an ADHD assessment, we will write to you, your GP and school to let them know you are on our waiting list.

There is no test that diagnoses ADHD. Once you have reached the top of our waiting list, we will invite you to an assessment appointment in our clinic. We will want to speak to the young person and their parents to understand the features of ADHD they are concerned about, what impact they have and any other difficulties. It is often possible to give you a diagnosis on the day, but we may decide we need further information or a discussion with other members of the team. We aim to have a completed report with you within four weeks.

For all young people and their families, we offer discussion and written information about the diagnosis. We also have a post diagnosis workshop available for parents. We give written information and advice to your school about supporting a young person with ADHD.

We can then discuss other treatment options with you like medication
